A Wise Old Tree

Walking around behind the Carillon, there are lots of surprises. One of those special features is this majestic tree that looms over a clearing at the edge of the woods.  It might remind you of a certain Shell Silverstein book, or an Ent, from the Lord of the Rings. Pay a visit. Bring a kid [...]

The Aftermath: Boosted Bees & Busted Bricks

The fallen tulip poplar tree near the Roundhouse is gone and so are the bees that lived within it. Previously, we posted our own pictures and video from CBS6 as a warning about the danger of aggitated bees. However, the ongoing story of the tree mess has concluded with a new home for the bees. What are These Things?

This interesting blue structure behind the Ha’Penny stage looks too tall to be a jungle gym or a piece of workout equipment. Can anyone enlighten the rest of us about it’s intended use?

Cooling Your Hou$e

Air conditioning bills got you down? You’re not the only one.  Commiserate and collaborate with David from Rosewood Ave.   He added this comment to a great discussion thread about the need for a local solar panel initiative. I just spent last weekend blowing insulation in my attic! Trying to do anything and everything I can [...]

Fresca Restaurant to Open this Fall

Another delicious sounding restaurant is going in just across the footbridge (foodbridge?) at Cary and Addision.  Here’s an excerpt from the Richmond Magazine blog: If things go according to plan, by mid-October, the space will house Fresca on Cary, a 1,000-square-foot restaurant with the tagline, “We’re not vegetarian, we just don’t serve meat,” Jimmy Sneed [...]

The Progress on McCollumn’s McMansion

When ex-Mayor Rudy McCollumn’s house was first featured on this site for its “supersized” construction of an addition, it wasn’t clear how the house was going to turn out. Well, it’s coming together as an eye-catching work of stone art.  Lakeview Ave features a number of impressive houses that reflect the regal spectacle of the [...]

An Alley Stand-off

Ten garages face off against each other in the ally, two rows of five, like greasers and socs in The Outsiders. Who knows what mischief they get into after dark.

The Pump House Explained

Richmond.com has a feature story about the past and future of the Pump House.  Here’s an excerpt: In contrast to the more utilitarian modern style of public works facilities, the Pump House was designed in an ornate Gothic style and was intended to serve as more that just a water-pumping station. Its upper level was [...]

We’re “the most changed” Neighborhood

Say what you will about climbing real estate assessments, gentrification, and white flight to and fro, the homicide and crime numbers may tell the most significant story about the neighborhoods that sit just south of the Fan.
