The Alleys of Mayberry, I mean Maymont

Hanover County? Nope. Maymont, Richmond City.

When you head South of the Fan, past the Randolph neighborhood, on the other side of the Amelia Street School, and cross Harrison Street’s western conclusion, you wind up at the Maymont neighborhood. Bungalo-style houses are nestled under a canopy of trees stretching further than most Richmonders realize, nearly to the canal and the train tracks on the north bank of the river. It feels like our own little down-home country town where time seems to pass as slow as molasses. It’s a quaint urban anachronism and the alleys are no exception…

Country roads, take me home.

When you want to feel your car wheels on a gravel road, Maymont’s alleys are at your service. But, probably not a suitable route to use when heading out to Texas Beach or the Maymont gardens at the corners of the neighborhood.

All downhill to the school yard.

In the next couple posts, we’ll get into some of the oddities that one can see when walking the Maymont alleys.

This is pretty cool. I like the alley tours you’ve done the past few weeks. Interesting to see a usually unseen part of the area.
