Your headline is misleading. Though robberies may technically be up 250 percent. In context, that’s 5 more robberies when compared with the same time period last year. That’s an increase from 2 to 7 robberies.
Without context, your headline does a disservice to the residents and visitors to the Fan as well as the hardworking officers of Third Precinct.
~Dionne Waugh, Richmond Police Public Affairs Unit
Thanks for voicing your concern Dionne Waugh. The full report by Lt. Edward M. Capriglione is supplied here with the details of each of the 7 robberies in May. Also, “Robbery: 250% increase” is taken directly from the eighth line of the report. This isn’t just an increase over the two robberies in May 2009. There were also only two in each March and April 2010. Although 2 and 7 robberies in a month might both be low by some people’s standards, the increase needs to be noted, and people should probably keep their wits about them.
Jason Guard FTW. Good to see the city patrolling our neighborhood, as much as they are our community web site.
I held my tongue on a similar jibe, Ken. But I’m glad you picked up where I left off. The thing is, I see where Dionne Waugh is coming from. Ironically, we both employ a degree of hyperbole for our own purposes. And those purposes are distinctly different. Managing public impressions of the police department and prestigious neighborhoods (only the Fan is mentioned) is not the top priority of this web site. I read every one of those seven robbery descriptions, and I don’t want to find myself or anyone else in the position that those people found themselves: a gun pulled, kicked in the head and body repeatedly, assaulted in one’s own home, and most of all, I don’t want my sons to grow up fatherless because I refused to give up my Blackberry (I seriously don’t think I could give it up).
No worries – I think you’re doing an excellent job keeping us aware and informed all relevant news and reports related to Byrd Park. I just chuckled at Dionne Waugh’s comment as she is clearly concerned with disservices committed upon the residents and visitors of the Fan. Her initial response is a shining exemplar of “public affairs in the city of Richmond”. (ie. Fail).
[...] June crime report from the Richmond Police Department is posted below. For those who scrutinized last month’s report. We saw a 250 increase in robberies (from 2 to 7 in the 3rd precinct). This month, there were [...]
