The “Nessy” of Fountain Lake
The other day, I was walking with my wife and child around Fountain Lake, when we struck up polite conversation with a fisherman. As he cast his line out, he explained that only the little fish were biting, but not the great big monster fish that lives in the lake. Huh? There’s a big fish in there? He simply pointed out toward the center near the geyser of water.
“See the fin poking up?”
And I did. This was no turtle’s nose. It was a black triangle about the size of a man’s hand.
“You can sorta make out the outline of the fish’s body.”
This part was a little more hazy. Although there did seem to be a dark patch beneath the protruding dorsal fin, I couldn’t tell how big we were talking (though I did immediately fear for any baby ducklings that might tread atop the lake’s surface).
“I think it’s some kind of carp.”
I nodded and contemplated what it’s life must be like contending with the paddleboats. And that was it. The kid got antsy and we left. I had my Blackberry in my pocket, but sight of our very own seamonster rendered me too stunned to remember to take a murky picture that would inspire thousands of speculators.
Anyone else catch a glimpse of ol’Founty?

Heard from a neighbor that grass carp were introduced to Fountain Lake. That type of fish can get to 40lbs and nearly 4ft long. But maybe… under the right circumstances (like an abundance of stale bread from goose-feeding park goers) they can get even bigger than that. Maybe we’ve got one that’s off the charts, tired of devouring ducklings, excited about it’s first Sally Bell’s cupcake, and considering a nocturnal visit to Carytown, or a run for at-large mayor. Just sayin.
Nice.
We’ve seen it a couple of times. Might be a grass carp but it looks more like a common carp to me (gold with big ol’ scales). Regardless, it is a big one.
Incidentally, there are koi in these lakes too. Who knows what else.
