Graffiti on Maymont’s Playground

Just a couple months after Maymont Pre-K Center received a brand new playground structure someone went and sprayed a graffiti tag on it. The symbols seem to read “We:” although it’s not clear what that means. Have any of you seen this tag around town? If you have any leads about who did this please [...]

Our Council-person, Immortalized

Yes, that’s Marty Jewell’s face on that… well, can you tell what it is? See Style Weekly’s story to find out and where to get one for yourself.

Fountain Lake Memento on eBay

There’s a postcard of Fountain Lake on eBay. It doesn’t appear to be a collector’s item. Is it an antique? Bidding starts at $0.01 and shipping is $1.50.

Maymont Lets its Tacky Lights Shine

The secluded streets of the Maymont neighborhood don’t get much traffic, but the residents there are still extroverted with their Christmas spirit. The displays are more modest than the impressive incandescence in Byrd Park, but under the neighborhood’s canopy of trees, a little light makes a deep impression. More pics after the jump.

Don’t Follow in These Footsteps

At the eastern side of Fountain Lake, footprints can be seen left by someone meandering on the slush-covered ice. Needless to say, the daredevil who walked on the frozen water was either brave, or stupid, but probably both (continue reading and you’ll see). The Boulevardizen posted about the no ice skating topic recently. Click ‘more” [...]

Whose Lights You Callin’ Tacky?

The 2100 block of Maplewood and Rosewood may be intensely lit, but the 2200 block of Maplewood has a different style of Christmas light artistry. The giant snowman looks out over the intersection, ensuring that drivers obey the stop-sign, for at least this one month out of the year. It may seem like an odd [...]

Lamplighter is One Year Old

In early January, Lamplighter will be celebrating their one-year anniversary.  However, some of us remember the shop and snacking spot’s soft opening on December 17th, 2009.  Shortly afterwards, a blizzard buried Richmond in snow (sound familiar?) and they didn’t really officially open until after the holidays.  So, starting the 17th, go say hey and Happy [...]

The Ropes Course Strikes Back

After the Go Ape Ropes Course became a political hot potato, many assumed the proposal was either dead in the water, moved to Henrico, or postponed indefinitely. A curious Byrd Park neighbor, Jay, gave Go Ape a call and spoke with a PR rep, who directed him to the soothing video you see above. Does [...]

Pictures in the Park

A very charming music video ad by a local artist who’d like to take your picture in the park (turn up the volume). Christmas Photos in the Park from Kristin Partin Photography on Vimeo.

Civic League Meeting CANCELLED

From the Byrd Park Civic League president: The BPCL meeting scheduled for tomorrow December 11th has been cancelled. I am sorry to inform you but due to my work schedule I haven’t had any time to prepare for this meeting. If I can get caught up this weekend I will try to re-schedule it for [...]

Too Many Handicapped Parking Spaces?

From a concerned neighbor (who’s tired of carrying groceries a block from car to house): Mr. Jewell: There are at least five handicap parking parking spaces in my block and only two of them are legitimate. The Police Dept has advised that I contact your office to address this issue. Just being fair to my [...]

Houses So Bright, You Gotta Wear Shades

Two houses, about a block from each other on Rosewood and Maplewood respectively, are outshining a Richmond coliseum during a night game and the James Center’s light show. The Christmas House, as many call the spectacle at Rowland and Rosewood, adds new features ever year and leaves many of them up year round (unlit). It [...]

New Playground at Maymont…

… Maymont Elementary School that is. Actually, make that the new Pre-K center for Richmond’s downtown schools. After the Virginia Preschool Initiative program was consolidated at the school which had been slated for potential closure for years, a parents group consulted with Richmond Public Schools to help plan for a complete update of the school’s [...]

Reward for Stolen Championship Football Ring

From a craigslist posting labeled Byrd Park: I am offering a $75 reward for the return of my 1999 Virginia HS Football Championship ring. It was stolen from my house Thanksgiving night. It is not made of gold and thus has no value to anyone but myself. If you have seen this ring please email [...]

Vespa vs. Bicycle

Take your pick between this 1972 Vespa Rally 180 for $1200 or this 10 speed bicycle with milk crate on the back for $100.

A Political Power Struggle Over Parks?

The James River News Hub considers the issues surrounding J.R. Pope’s resignation as City Parks Director. In contrast to the contentious post here speculating whether the GoApe ropes course proposal “was Pope’s pet project,” the James River blog asks if the ropes course “was Pope’s undoing” in that his approach seemed uncharacteristically unilateral: Why would [...]

Ropes Course “currently under review”

F.T. Rea has a new piece up at Richmond.com where he tries to get answers about the process of approving the GoApe ropes course and it’s current status.  Here’s an excerpt: Now it’s difficult to find anyone who works fulltime at City Hall who will say what they know about Go Ape. And, forget about [...]
