Deciding the Future of the Byrd Park Civic League, Sat. 10/10 at 10am

A call to all Byrd Parkers:

Dear Neighbors,

This email is a reminder that the Byrd Park Civic League will meet October 10th at the Roundhouse at 10 am.

The agenda will consist of the election of officers and the future of the League.

We will not be distributing the usual paper newsletter, so please mark your calendars and spread the word to interested neighbors who may not be on this email list.

I always receive queries about changing the meeting time or date.  The date and time for this meeting was determined far in advance, and the Roundhouse reserved.  I regret that it conflicts with the the Richmond Folk Festival (and many other fun activities as well), but it can’t be helped.

The officers are president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer.  If anyone (including the current holders of those offices) wishes to stand for any of these offices, or wishes to nominate someone, please let me know.  I definitely will be stepping down.

If anyone wishes to place any other items on the agenda, please let me know.

All best,

Dennis Danvers
President, Byrd Park Civic League

Is anyone planning on stepping up to serve as BPCL president? If not, will those at the meeting nominate someone from among them? I’m wondering if it would be helpful to the organization to distribute the responsibilities of president among several officers or members.

It seems to me without the door to door mail drop that the meeting will be badly attended. The email list doesn’t cover many people and attendance is always slim.
We’re away this weekend so unable to attend. We will continue to support the BPCL how we can, but with a baby on the way an officer position is out of the question. We do hope the BPCL can stay together, we have issues we need to address as a neighborhood; the redevelopment of the old bus barn being just one of many.

Summer meetings were moved to Tuesday nights for 2 years and attendance was no higher. The Oct-Feb meetings were on Saturdays as our older residents did not like attending meetings after dark. Fliers/Newsletters were given to everyhome as possible but few pay dues and ads could not keep up with the costs AND only two people really did all the work. I do hope someone comes forward but my schedule since changing jobs means I can volunteer but not lead.

Actually, I have given checks for dues the last 3 years and none of them were ever cashed!

One common question I hear around the neighborhood is, “So, are you going to be the next BPCL president?” I’ve gotten it a few times. Unfortunately, I’m way overbooked with work/family/school/etc as it is. I want to help, but I can’t take on much responsibility.

I do believe there are willing participants and even leaders in the neighborhood. When I get my act together and organize the survey of Byrd Parkers’ interest and concerns, we’ll have a good amount of input and volunteers that could be a resurgence for BPCL. In the meantime, I hope the group will stay afloat one way or another.

During Saturday’s meeting, I’ll be taking my son to an event called Touch A Truck. He’s 1.5 yrs old and he’s obsessed with trucks. We can’t pass up the chance for him to touch one. Sorry to miss the meeting. I’m with yall in spirit.
